So important to think about communication beyond speech too - this is from one of my D4Dementia blogs https://d4dementia.com/2019/01/communication-its-more-than-just-words.html #AlzChat
#AlzChat When speaking to a person living with dementia, sit or kneel beside each other, eye to eye. Say their name, use a voice audible for their needs. Be KIND, GENTLE, LOVING. Maybe hold their hand. Our message is I SEE YOU. I CARE FOR YOU. 💜
@IRememberBetter You can also use the power of food, music and memories to open new pathways of interaction. #AlzChat #neuro #brain

From the https://www.dementia.org.au/sites/default/files/resources/dementia-language-guidelines.pdf - "preferred terms when talking about the impacts of dementia are
• disabling
• challenging
• life-changing
• stressful"
Rather than hopeless, impossible, devastating. Acknowledge impact but no need to disempower / frighten person. #AlzChat
Oh yes! This is a fab document- "Appropriate language must be:
• accurate
• respectful
• inclusive
• empowering
• non-stigmatising." Clearly explains why some language should not be used.. and what phrases are more respectful.. especially putting the PERSON first. #AlzChat
@bethyb1886 @DementiaAus Very useful. Thank you for sharing.
@bethyb1886 @DementiaAus Thanks - what a great resource #AlzChat
I signpost to this doc from @DementiaAus SO often https://www.dementia.org.au/sites/default/files/resources/dementia-language-guidelines.pdf #AlzChat
Language is powerful. Words influence how people see themselves, and how people are seen by others.
"A person living with dementia" is a more open description than "dementia sufferer".
The identity of a person is much wider than a condition. Words can reflect that. #AlzChat
